The ACMD (Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs) is a body of experts who advise the government. When a new drug appears on the street scene, the government must ask the advice of the ACMD before bring legislation before parliament to control a drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act or amend an existing classification. The government do not have to accept the advice of the ACMD, but they have a statutory duty to ask for the advice first.
